"The fact that we offer a wide range of services for patients at every stage of their care sets the Breast Cancer Center apart from other programs"

Memorial Breast Cancer Center, with freestanding locations at both Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood and Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, has been fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Established by the American College of Surgeons in 2005, the NAPBC designates centers that demonstrate the ultimate commitment to providing superior services and treatment to breast cancer patients.

Cynthia Frankel, RN, OCN, CBCN, director of research and development for Memorial Breast Cancer Center, said that the NAPBC conducted rigorous evaluation of their standards in leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and continuity of program improvements. The facilities not only met all criteria, but they surpassed expectations.

“The fact that we offer a wide range of services for patients at every stage of their care sets the Breast Cancer Center apart from other programs,” said Frankel. “We provide everything our patients and their families need to treat not only the breast cancer, but all the challenges that come along with the disease.”

Memorial Breast Cancer Center locations, part of the Memorial Cancer Institute, are two of just a handful of freestanding breast cancer centers nationwide dedicated entirely to breast cancer treatment. Services include genetic assessment when appropriate, the Image Recovery Center ®, breast cancer rehabilitation program and activities like Pink Ribbon yoga. Other additional features include:

-- Every new patient is evaluated prior to treatment by a multi-disciplinary team, including a breast pathologist; medical, surgical and radiation oncologist; a radiologist who is a breast imaging specialist, plastic surgeon and others from the breast cancer team of experts. The multidisciplinary team meets bi-weekly to evaluate new patients for prospective treatment designed for each person’s specific needs.

-- The Image Recovery Center® offers skin and hair care services, as well as products for use during chemotherapy treatments; wraps, hats and wigs when hair loss occurs; attractive arm sleeves to support the lymphatic system following lymph node removal during breast surgery, as well as breast prosthetics, bras and swimwear.

-- A full time psychologist is on staff to help patients and families cope with understandable anxiety and fear.

-- An organic vegetable, fruit and herb garden was planted last year with the direction and participation of Memorial Breast Cancer Center Oncologist Aruna Mani, MD, and it is now tended jointly by staff and patients. The goal is to emphasize the health benefits of diets filled with locally grown produce.

Memorial Breast Cancer Center has two locations to meet the needs of the community. The Breast Cancer Center at Memorial Regional Hospital is located at 3700 Johnson Street. The Breast Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital West is located at 603 North Flamingo Road, Suite 157 in Pembroke Pines.
