"We remain committed to our patients and our program."

Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute at Memorial Regional Hospital has maintained a three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) for five consecutive analysis periods between July 2009 and June 2012. In addition, Memorial achieved a three-star rating for Aortic Valve Replacement for the analysis periods during July 2009 to June 2012.

This recognition places Memorial’s cardiac program in the top 6 percent in the nation for aortic valve replacement and in the top 14 percent in the nation for CABG.

As a national leader in healthcare transparency and accountability, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has established the STS Public Reporting initiative. It allows participants in the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery database to voluntarily and publicly report their surgical outcomes. Using this information, consumers can see how participating cardiac surgical groups compare with national benchmarks for overall performance, survival, complications and other measures.  Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute participates in public reporting.

“We are honored by this recognition from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, which speaks to Memorial Regional Hospital’s quality and the high caliber of medical experts that serve this community,” said Richard Perryman, MD, medical director of Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute. “We remain committed to our patients and our program.”

Dr. Perryman extended his congratulations to the cardiac surgery team – Michael Cortelli, MD, chief of adult cardiac surgery; Juan Plate, MD, cardiac surgeon; Lance Cohen, MD, intensivist and medical director of Heart Surgery Unit; Sean D. O’Donnell, MD, medical director of endovascular surgery; Arthur Palamara, MD, vascular surgeon, and Jeffrey A. Hertz, vascular surgeon – for maintaining such high standards.
